This was hard for me to get my mind around. I picked this book up because I’m teaching a World Civilizations course in the fall and felt I needed to ot a bit deeper into the history of China because this will be one of my go-to civilizations for the course.
It shifts as we reach the late 19th century to include much more outrage at the civilizatoon of China by the Western powers and Japan from the s on.

For example, it would have been interesting to know the Chinese equivalent of the ethnic group “Sogdian”, or the Chinese name of Matteo Ricci. Consequently it took me all of 9 months to complete the civilizatioj of the book which was considerably longer than I had planned. Though I do not doubt Gernet’s scholarship, which in this book is wide-ranging and often in depth, the book suffers firstly from a sometimes over-specialisation on certain matters such as devoting several pages to the intricacies of Tang dynasty horse-breeding and a startling lack of work on post China.
